The little black dress has been making some dramatic red carpet appearances in 2010, proving its timeless high fashion quality. In January, Marion Cotillard wore a one-shouldered simply lined Elie Saab dress to the Palm Springs International Film Festival that oozed understated glamour and femininity. She teamed her LBD with black leather studded Christian Dior heels and a beaded clutch to give this feminine dress a soft rock look.
More recently Cameron Diaz has walked the red carpet in a little black dress by Lanvin at the premier of her new film, co-starring Tom Cruise, Knight and Day. Only this morning, when I was reading a copy of Hello! Magazine, Cheryl Cole was pictured at the Cannes Film Festival Cheryl continuing to prove herself as the up and coming glamorous face of British women wearing a stunning Roberto Cavalli evening gown with a flowing black tule skirt. The little black dress has well and truly come into it’s own this season, with so many different styles and ways to wear it that there is guaranteed to be a look that suits everyone.
Throughout Paris Fashion Week for autumn/winter ’09, the little black dress was a constant, not only on the catwalk but also being displayed on many front row fashion savvy celebrities. At Miu Miu, Kate Moss kept up to date with the seasons leather trend in a skin tight LBD. Katy Perry was to be seen wearing an elegant and stylish black dress, with sculptured shoulders from the Karl Lagerfeld collection and Rhianna grabbed a front row seat at Gareth Pugh in one of his own revealing creations.
More recently in the autumn/winter shows for 2010, the little black dress once again made catwalk appearances, with Stella McCartney featuring a number of variations of the wardrobe staple through her ‘underwear as outerwear’ designs. These gave the little black dress a modern, simple, sexy and feminine twist, with simple lines and delicate fabrics. Silk and chiffon are a must for those wishing to try out this daring take on the classic LBD, keep all accessories neutral and makeup natural.
Balmain brought the LBD to the autumn/winter catwalks with a simple feminine mini, perfect for those conscious of their upper arms as it has full-length sleeves. With highly accentuated shoulders and a daringly low cut neckline this LBD is perfect teamed with chunky heeled boots and an on trend skinny waist belt.
Dries Van Noten also showed the little black dress in their autumn/winter ’10 collection. Texture, tailoring and subtle patterning are key features in their designs for this season, with the dresses exuding grown-up elegance. The look is sophisticated with half sleeves and knee length skirts showing throughout the collection. Simple scoop necks and waistlines match perfectly with killer heels in muted colours and statement bags. In contrast to the understated elegance of Dries Van Noten, House of Holland designer Henry Holland went all out with his colourful designs for autumn/winter ’10. His creations had a sportswear feel, with jersey and cotton used to create a sporty LBD with full sleeves and a simple white waistline. Teamed with wedges or killer heels and big colourful jewellery, this look affords the wearer the glamour of the LBD in the evening, without having to look too dressed up. Holland also gives the little black dress a thoroughly space-age twist in his leather and pale turquoise wool dress. This may be a dress for the more daring but Holland’s designs show the versatility of the LBD, either dressed down glamour or high-end extreme fashion.

In the words of Coco Chanel, ‘Fashion fades, only style remains the same’. For elegant, timeless and comfortable style there’s no doubt that style is the little black dress.
